Out in the Development Zone of Dalian there is an area called Five Color City. It was built with the idea of luring tourists and shoppers out to the Development Zone.* Five Color City has the look of a Main Street Disneyland type area of an amusement park. All the buildings are decorated with strange and colorful flourishes, and there are anthropromorphic statues everywhere. Unfortunately, or fortunately, the tourists never came. Five Color City now caters to people that make the Development Zone their home. It makes for a good photographic daytrip free of the crowds that you’d find at most toursit attractions in China. Just make sure you head back to town before public transportation stops.
*For those of you unfamiliar with Chinese cities, development zones are usually a good 40 to 60 kilometers outside the city proper. Yet, they are still considered part of the city.
